Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)

Efficient, automated tracking for pallets and cases.

Streamline your tracking with RFID

Radio frequency identification technology (RFID) enables wireless identification of pallets, cases, and products without manual scanning. The system consists of RFID-tagged items, readers, and antennae, making it faster, more reliable, and less labour-intensive than barcode scanning.

Using RFID tags, you can identify and track inventory automatically as pallets or cartons move through your warehouse, manufacturing line, or loading bay. No manual scanning is needed, drastically reducing handling time and errors.

How RFID systems work

RFID systems comprise two main elements:

  • RFID tags – small transponders attached to or embedded in product packaging. The tag contains a microchip that stores information about the item or shipment, such as use-by date, manufacturing date, shipping destination.
  • Readers and antennae – emit radio waves to scan RFID tags without direct line of sight. The radio signal may have a range of a few metres. The antenna can emit and receive signals back from the tag, which is passed to the computer system to be analysed.

GS1 manages the global standards for RFID technology, ensuring that unique ID numbers are used to track and trace products, services and items through the global supply chain.

Benefits of RFID technology

  • Faster throughput – automate case and pallet reads in seconds, without the need for line of sight. RFID-based systems can scan items 25X faster than with barcodes.
  • Touchless scanning – no need to manually scan each barcode. RFID readers are entirely automated and can pull information from a tag even a couple of hundred metres away.
  • Batch and pallet-level tracking – ideal for full traceability
  • Reliable under tough conditions – works even through packaging or shrink-wrap
  • Durable and reusable – RFID tags are tiny and can be embedded deep in the product packaging, meaning less risk of damage in the supply chain.
